Overheard a homeowner say 'just use drywall screws' for a cabinet install last week
I was at the lumber yard grabbing plywood and this guy was on the phone telling his buddy to put up some kitchen cabinets with drywall screws. I almost dropped my sheet of maple right there. Said he was trying to save $15 on a box of cabinet screws. Has anyone else run into folks who think all screws are the same? I had to bite my tongue.

Man that hurts to hear. I've watched a buddy try to hang a heavy mirror with drywall screws and it pulled right out of the stud two days later, cracked the drywall too. Those cabinet screws have the coarse threads and the little nibs that actually bite into wood, not just spin around in there. Fifteen bucks now vs a whole cabinet crashing down later, seems like an easy choice to me.

@mia748 nailed it. I'm the guy who once used drywall screws to hang a shelf full of books because I was too lazy to walk back to the hardware aisle. Woke up at 3am to a crash that sounded like a bomb went off - shelf, books, and a chunk of drywall all over the floor. Learned my lesson real quick, and now I keep a box of actual cabinet screws in my truck so I don't make that mistake again. $15 is cheap insurance when you're talking about a whole kitchen falling down.
