Overheard a guy at REI saying my tent was too heavy

I was buying some new stakes last Saturday and this guy next to me looked at my 6 pound tent and said I was carrying way too much. He said he sleeps under a tarp setup that weighs under 2 pounds and has been fine for 50 nights. Now I'm wondering if I should switch to a lighter shelter or just stick with what I know works.

Man that's rough, people can be so pushy about gear choices. 6 pounds is a little on the heavy side but if it keeps you dry and comfortable that's what counts. I've been camping for years and still use my old 4 person tent that weighs like 8 pounds because I sleep like a baby in it. Tarp setups are cool and all but not everyone wants to wake up with dew on their face or have spiders crawl on them at night. Stick with what works for you, ultralight guys can be super preachy.

Heard some ultralight hiker actually switched back to a tent just for the peace of mind.

Wait didn't your buddy Mike have that happen where his fancy tarp collapsed on him in a storm and he spent the night huddled under a tree? I'll take a heavy tent any day over waking up with my sleeping bag soaked.
