My old manager in Phoenix insisted I stop taking on extra projects to 'focus on my core role' after I hit 60 hours a week.

Ignored him, got burnt out in 3 months and missed a promotion. Anyone else been given advice that sounded bad but was actually spot on?

Ugh, that's not just about burnout though. He was trying to protect the team's schedule from one person's overwork. You going down messed up timelines for everyone else.
