Heard a marketing director say 'any press is good press' after that pet food recall stunt. Still not sure I buy it.

Was at a networking mixer last Tuesday and overheard this guy from a mid-sized dog food company bragging about how their 'accidental' mislabeling scandal got them 3 million views on TikTok. He was dead serious saying the apology video they posted has more engagement than any of their ads ever did. I get that impressions matter in our line of work but aren't we past pretending blatant screw-ups are a strategy? The other side is maybe attention span is so short now that people forget the bad part after a week. Curious what this group thinks - does the 'any press' rule still hold up in 2024 or did that die with the old media?

Been seeing way too many guys using clipper guards wrong on tight fades

I was at a barber meetup in Columbus last month and watched three different dudes try to blend a fade using lever play with the wrong guard size. They kept chasing the line and making it worse. If you are doing a zero fade you don't need a #2 guard to knock down the bald line. That just pushes the line higher. Use your half guard open first then work down. Has anyone else noticed new barbers skipping the half guard step on fades?

Threw away $200 on a stock newsletter last month

I signed up for this stock picking newsletter that promised 20% monthly returns. After a month of following their picks I lost $200 in fees and another $150 on trades that went nowhere. The advice was basically just buy the hype stocks you see on social media. Anyone else fall for one of these paid tip services?

TIL Japan Hoya glass in Canon FD lenses is way harder to find than German Schott glass

Was cleaning a set of 50mm f/1.4 lenses last week and noticed the Hoya version had a haze that wouldn't budge even after 3 tries with solvent. Is there a trick to getting that coating clean without scratching it?

Spent 3 hours tracking down a bad connector that looked fine

Had a job in Greenville last week where a customer's signal was dropping randomly every few minutes. Checked all the usual spots, splitters, amps, nothing wrong. Finally found a compression fitting on a drop that looked perfect but had a tiny crack inside the dielectric. Took me three hours to find that one stupid connector. Has anyone else run into a fitting that looked good but was actually garbage from the factory?

Realized my big mistake after 3 years of installing motion detectors wrong

I used to always mount motion detectors dead flat on the wall until a builder in Austin pointed out I was missing half the coverage area. Tilting them down just 10 degrees made a night and day difference in catching movement near the floor. Anyone else ever catch a simple angle change that fixed their false alarm rate?

PSA: Freezing leftover tomato paste in ice cube trays saved my wallet

I got so tired of buying a can of tomato paste for a recipe that only needed a tablespoon and then throwing the rest out a week later. Tbh it felt like throwing dollar bills in the trash every single time. Finally tried scooping the leftover paste into an ice cube tray and freezing it. Each cube is roughly 2 tablespoons so I just pop one out when I need it. No more wasted paste and I don't have to buy a new can every time I make chili or spaghetti sauce. Has anyone else tried this with other canned stuff like chipotles in adobo or coconut milk?

Saw a reality star post a 'vintage' photo that was clearly from last year

I was scrolling Instagram last night and noticed this actress from that dating show posted this super moody black and white photo with a caption about 'throwback to simpler times.' But I actually remembered the exact same photo from her feed like 14 months ago, and it was in color back then. She just desaturated it and called it vintage. Her fans were eating it up in the comments, saying how 'classic' and 'timeless' it looked. It got me thinking, do these people think we don't have memories or something? I swear every other celeb is doing this now, just slapping a filter on a recent selfie and pretending it's from 2005. Has anyone else caught a famous person posting a fake throwback like that?

My aunt watched me bake a sourdough loaf and just said 'that's a lot of work for bread'

She saw me do the whole stretch and fold process over 4 hours and the starter feeding for 2 weeks before that, and it made me wonder - is all the effort actually worth it for the taste, or are we just doing it for the process itself? Anyone else have a family member who made them question why they bake the hard way?

PSA: That cheap tool setter probe I bought off eBay cost me 3 hours of rework

I grabbed a $60 tool setter probe from some no-name eBay seller last month thinking I was saving big over the $300+ name brand ones. It worked fine for about a week, then started giving me readings off by 0.005" randomly without warning. Crashed a part so bad I had to re-run the whole program and scrap $120 worth of aluminum stock. Has anyone else gotten burned by cheap eBay tooling or am I just unlucky?
