Got told I was 'over brushing' my flues - changed up my whole technique

An inspector I ran into at a job in Columbus last month watched me work for 5 minutes. He said 'you are scrubbing those walls like you are trying to erase them, but all you are doing is wearing out your rods and making more dust'. At first I was annoyed but then I realized he was right. I was using way too much pressure and going over the same spots 3 or 4 times. I backed off, slowed down, and used a lighter touch. My shoulder stopped hurting after a week and I am finishing jobs faster. Has anyone else had to unlearn a bad habit because some random guy pointed it out?

Sometimes scrubbing harder is the only way to get a real clean.

Man, that hits close to home. Did you find yourself fighting the brush harder when you were tired, or was it just a bad habit you picked up early? I'm curious if the lighter touch changed anything about how your flues sound or feel when you're done. I've seen guys who over brush end up with a weird scratchy finish that takes forever to seal.

That scratchy finish is the worst, makes sealing a total nightmare for sure.
