That solar panel install from 2 years ago finally gave out on me last week

I got a set of 6 used panels from a guy on Craigslist back in 2022, saved a bunch of money upfront. Last Tuesday, the inverter just started beeping and shut down completely around 3 PM. Turns out the warranty was void since they were resold, and a new one costs $400 plus labor. I spent the weekend jerry-rigging a portable battery setup to keep my fridge running. Now I'm wondering if buying used hardware is even worth it long term, or if I should have just paid full price for new equipment. Has anyone else had a used solar setup fail on them after a few years?

Flip the inverter over and check if there's a date code sticker hidden under the mounting bracket - some manufacturers use those to track actual production dates separately from the sales warranty. Is your inverter a brand that's known for honoring those hidden codes?

Honestly, that really sucks and I feel your pain man. I did the same thing about three years ago with a used setup from OfferUp, and the inverter started acting flaky after just a year and a half. Tbh, I ended up spending more in the long run trying to patch it together with random parts. Ngl, it's a gamble buying used solar gear, especially when you're relying on it for stuff like keeping food cold.
