Rant: That one comment that made me rethink my whole outdoor gear setup

Was scrolling through a post about hiking boots on Reddit last week and someone said they always bring a $5 rain poncho even on sunny days. Thought they were crazy until I got caught in a surprise storm near Mount Rainier and my jacket failed. That cheap poncho saved my whole trip and now I keep one in every bag I own.

Bought a $3 poncho at a gas station once for a hike that had zero clouds in the forecast. Felt dumb carrying it for three hours. Then a freak hailstorm hit and I was the only one dry under a tree. Everyone else looked like drowned cats. Now I have them stashed in my car, my work bag, and even one in the pocket of my rain jacket. People make fun of me until something happens. Then they ask if I have a spare.

My buddy @jessica_hall49 and I have the same philosophy now. I got caught in a surprise downpour at a concert once. Soaking wet for four hours, phone died, shoes squishing. Now I keep a folded up emergency rain coat in every single bag I own. Carried one to a baseball game last summer. No rain in sight. People laughed. Then the seventh inning rolled around and everyone was scrambling under the bleachers while I just popped mine on and kept watching the game. Felt like a king.

Is that not one of the best feelings in the world? I have a tiny umbrella crammed in my glove box that's been there since 2018. My friends roast me for it every time they see it poking out, but I've used it at least four times now while everyone else was getting drenched running to their cars. They never laugh when I'm the only one with dry socks on the drive home.
