I finally tried writing a prompt about a character's specific fear instead of just their job, and the story practically wrote itself.
The 'architect afraid of heights' prompt I wrote last week generated way more interesting conflict and dialogue in my writing group than my old 'an architect solves a mystery' idea ever did.

Makes sense that worked better. A job is just what someone does, but a fear is who they are. The architect solving a mystery is just a task. The architect scared of heights has to fight themselves just to go to work. That internal fight gives you way more to write about than any external puzzle.

Wait, an architect scared of heights? That's like a chef who hates food! How did they even get through school? I can't imagine the daily panic of just looking at blueprints for a skyscraper.

Right, like @the_joel said, the guy's whole job is a personal horror movie.
