Appreciation post: I was at the new library in Portland and noticed they had these tiny, perfect ring lights built into the ends of the bookshelf aisles for filming.
It made me realize how much a simple, permanent light source in a public space can completely change your ability to grab a quick, well-lit talking-head clip without hauling gear.

That's a smart design choice. Reminds me of the old study carrels in my college library that had those little green glass lamps. You could actually read the tiny print in those law books without getting a headache. Felt like a proper scholar, not just some kid cramming. Modern lighting tries to be all ambient and ends up casting shadows right where you need to see. Give me a dedicated task light any day.

Honestly, did those lamps have a specific name or brand?

My old drafting table had a Luxo lamp with the spring arm, the kind architects always seem to use. That thing was a lifesaver for detail work, you could position the light exactly where you needed it without any glare. The brand is a bit pricey but you can find similar ones from other companies. It made such a difference compared to just using the overhead light in the room.
