Can we talk about the time a free USB drive almost got me

This was about six months ago at a local tech conference in Austin. Someone was handing out branded flash drives at a booth, and I grabbed one without thinking. When I plugged it into my laptop at home, my antivirus flagged it instantly for a trojan. I had to do a full system scan and wipe the drive. It made me realize how easy it is to get tricked by something that looks harmless. Has anyone else had a close call with a physical device like that?

So what's the best way to spot a targeted attack like that mailed gift card?

Read an article about this happening at a security conference, of all places. They called them "USB drop attacks." People just leave infected drives in parking lots or cafes, hoping someone picks one up and plugs it in. It's scary because curiosity gets the better of you. You just want to see what's on it, and bam, your system is compromised. Makes you second-guess every piece of free tech you find.

Yeah, but that's a really old trick. It only works on people who don't know better. Most modern systems have protections that ask before running anything from a USB. The real risk isn't some random drive in a cafe, it's targeted attacks where they mail a fake gift card or a branded drive to your office. That's where people let their guard down. The parking lot thing is mostly for movies.
