That one comment on my fan art that totally changed how I sketch now

So I posted a digital portrait on here maybe 3 months ago. Some user named PixelPunk42 just said "your shadows are too muddy, try using a cooler tone for them." I was kinda annoyed at first ngl. But I tried it on my next piece and honestly it made such a big difference. Has anyone else gotten a random tip from a comment that stuck with you like that?

What's wrong with muddy shadows anyway? Some of the best art I've seen has that grungy, dark vibe where cooler tones would totally kill the mood. I feel like people get too caught up in technical rules and forget that style and emotion matter more than perfect color theory.

Wait, you're telling me there's people out here who actually think muddy shadows are always bad? That's wild to me honestly. I've been sketching for years and some of my favorite pieces came from days where I just slapped down whatever dark color I had left on the brush without overthinking it. That grungy vibe you describe is exactly what makes certain landscapes or fantasy scenes feel alive and raw, not polished and boring. I remember drawing this old barn at dusk once and I used straight up black and brown for the shadows cause that's just how the scene felt, and everyone who saw it said it had this heavy, moody atmosphere that cooler blues could never give. People get so hung up on rules like complementary colors and color temperature that they forget art is supposed to hit you in the gut, not just check technical boxes. You're spot on, style and emotion come first, the rest is just tools you can bend or break.
