Update: I finally bought a Klein ET600 voltage tester after my old one gave me a false reading
I spent about $80 on it last month, thinking it was just another tool. It saved my bacon last week on a service call in a 1950s house with some really sketchy wiring. The old place had a shared neutral that my old tester would have missed, but the ET600 caught it right away. Has anyone else had a close call that made them upgrade a basic piece of gear?

My old meter lied about a hot 240 line.

Ever have a tool you thought was fine until it almost got you hurt? My old non-contact tester didn't beep on a live wire once because the insulation was weird. Threw that thing out the next day.

I used to think a basic voltage pen was good enough for quick checks. That changed after a rewire job in an old bungalow last fall. My cheap pen showed nothing, but when I went to pull the wire my hand brushed the terminal and I got a solid tingle. Turns out it was a back-fed circuit the pen just missed. Bought a proper two-pole tester the next morning and haven't looked back.
