Had a brake shoe snap on a 20-year old Otis last Tuesday. Weird failure.
Was doing a routine PM on a traction unit downtown. Brake shoe just gave up mid inspection. No warning signs. Called the supplier - they said it's the third one this quarter. Has anyone seen more of these going bad lately?

Did you check the batch number on the shoes? Had a similar run with a different brand last year, turned out a bad batch was going through with hairline cracks from the factory.

Oh man, that is such a good point. I had the exact same thing happen with a pair of trail runners I bought last spring. I didn't think to check the batch number, but the sole started separating from the upper after maybe 20 miles of light use. The customer service guy finally told me it was a known issue with that specific production run. It's frustrating because you think you're getting a good deal or a quality product, but it's just a factory problem. Definitely worth checking the numbers on anything now.

Troy832 is right to bring that up, batch numbers have saved me more than once on defective gear. It's a pain that you have to play detective with new products just to avoid factory flaws. Appreciate you sharing that Troy, it's a solid reminder for everyone.
