Old timer told me to trust my ears over the diagnostic tool on a call back

That phrase "trust your ears" really hit home for me. I've been in this trade for over 20 years now and I can't count how many times my ears caught something a meter or sensor totally missed. The diagnostic tools are great for pinpointing what you already suspect, but they don't sense the subtle changes in sound and feel that come with experience. That old timer gave you solid advice, especially on a call back where something was clearly wrong the first time. It takes years to develop that kind of instinct, and when you learn to blend both your ears and the tools, you really start cutting down on those return trips.

Man, that's exactly it. I had a blower door test on a new build last year where all the numbers looked textbook perfect, but something just felt off when I was walking through the place. Turned out a window was sealed but not actually latched, just one of those things a meter would never flag. You can't program that kind of gut feeling into a tablet. The real craft comes from letting your hands and ears work while the tools just back you up.

Hold up, you REALLY think a guy with 20 years in the trade is just making up stories about his ears catching things? I mean, it's a window that wasn't latched. That's not some mystical sixth sense, that's just being thorough and double-checking. Feels like we're acting like it's brain surgery or something.
