I was dead wrong about tuners for years

For the longest time I thought handheld tuners were the only way to go. My 2015 5.0 had a SCT BDX on it for 3 years and I figured that was just how it worked. Then a buddy let me borrow his HP Tuners setup to log some data runs. After 2 pulls I saw my fuel trims were way off at part throttle and my timing was pulling 6 degrees in 3rd gear. The tune I paid $400 for was basically a generic file they loaded and shipped. Took me a weekend to learn the basics and fix the timing curve myself. Do any of you guys run custom tuning software or are you still using the canned tunes from the bigger companies?

My neighbor's nephew runs a small speed shop up in Ohio and he told me the exact same thing about Lund. He had a customer come in with a 2018 GT that was pinging on 93 octane with their tune. The kid had been driving it like that for months. My neighbor pulled the file and found the timing was set for 91 octane with no adjustment. Said he's never seen anything like it from a "reputable" company. Makes you wonder how many cars are out there running around with tunes that were never properly tested.

Went HP Tuners after a bad Lund tune and never looked back.
