Been hot shoeing for 20 years and just realized I was burning the sole the whole time

An old timer watched me one afternoon and asked why my nails kept backing out, then pointed to the smoke coming off the sole. Does everyone learn that at some point or was I just slow on the uptake?

Man that's a brutal one but honestly half the old school guys seem to have some weird trick they never tell anyone about until you mess up in front of them. Nobody ever warns you about the smoke being a dead giveaway.

Oh man, you hit the nail right on the head there. It's like they all have this secret handbook they pass around at the old timers meetings or something. I remember my first year on the job, had this old fella walk me through a simple repair, showed me his way, and then just watched me screw it up for an hour before he said "you know you're supposed to tap it twice before you pull, right?" Drove me nuts. Honestly though, it's almost a relief when you finally figure out which tricks you were missing, then you feel like a fool for not knowing.
