I keep seeing people use polyester thread for denim repairs and it drives me crazy
Was helping a friend fix a tear in her favorite pair of jeans last weekend and she pulled out this cheap poly thread she bought at a craft store. I told her that stuff won't hold up against denim and she looked at me like I was speaking a different language. Two washes later the repair came undone. Why do so many people not know that you need heavy duty cotton or bonded nylon thread for thick fabrics like denim? Has anyone else run into this misunderstanding when talking about garment repair?

A couple washes isn't really enough to judge. Polyester thread is actually pretty strong, it just doesn't handle heat well from ironing or drying. If she washed in cold and air dried, it might have held up fine. People blame the thread but sometimes it's how you treat the repair afterward.

Honestly I used to grab whatever thread was cheapest too but that poly stuff just doesn't hold up on denim.

Man @allen.ivan you nailed it, poly thread is a total pain on denim. I had the same thing happen with a pair of jeans I tried to patch up, the thread snapped after like two wears. Learned my lesson the hard way, now I only use cotton or bonded nylon for heavy stuff like that. The polyester just doesn't have the grip to handle all that stress from denim seams and movement.
