A homeowner in Boise said my post holes looked sloppy and it got me thinking

He pointed out the dirt around the holes was all torn up and uneven, which made his yard look bad even before the fence went in. I started using a piece of plywood to pile the dirt on, and it keeps the site way cleaner. Do you think that extra bit of cleanup is worth the time, or is it just for show?

Tried that plywood trick last summer on a deck job. Client kept complaining about the mud tracked onto their patio. Started putting a tarp down for all the cut-offs and dirt. Took two extra minutes to lay it out but saved me fifteen minutes of sweeping and hosing later. Clean site meant no complaints and they tipped extra. That little bit of prep always pays off.

Seriously, it's just dirt. It's a yard, not a museum.

That "it's just dirt" line from patricia_schmidt14 is exactly the kind of thing that drives me nuts. It's never just about the dirt itself, it's about showing you respect the space you're working in. I see this everywhere, like people who leave a mess in a public bathroom because "someone gets paid to clean it." That two minutes of prep Jessica mentioned builds way more trust than just doing the main job fast and sloppy. It tells the client you care about the whole picture, not just getting your part done. Why do you think so many people skip those small considerate steps?
