My old spray gun finally gave up the ghost on a big dining table job

It happened about a month ago, right in the middle of laying down the final coat of conversion varnish on a 7-foot walnut table. The gun, a model I've had for over fifteen years, just started spitting and sputtering like crazy. I tried cleaning the tip and thinning the mix a bit more, but it was clear the internal seals were shot. I had to stop everything, strip the whole wet coat back with solvent, and sand it smooth again. It set me back a full day and a half of work. It got me thinking about how I used to fix everything, but now some parts are just impossible to find. Ended up ordering a new gun, but it's not the same as the one I knew inside and out. Anyone have a good source for older gun parts, or is it just a lost cause these days?

Ugh, that's the worst feeling when a trusted tool dies mid-project! I had the same thing happen with my old HVLP gun. Check out the website "Spray Gun World" for parts diagrams and some old stock seals. Sometimes you can match the seal material and find a generic o-ring that works. It's a long shot, but worth a look before you fully retire the old gun.

Wait, you actually found parts for an old HVLP gun on a website? I figured those things were totally disposable once they went down. Every time I've tried to fix a spray gun it's been a dead end, like the company stopped making parts five years ago. You must have gotten really lucky with that site.

Ever try hitting up a local hydraulic or pneumatic supply shop? They usually have a huge selection of seals and might be able to match yours by size and material if you bring the old one in. Could save you a ton of time over waiting for a mail order part.
