Showerthought: I was at the antique mall in Springfield and saw a 'distressed' dresser that looked like it was attacked with a hammer and a belt sander.

It was priced at $800 and the 'finish' was just brown paint slopped over raw dents, which honestly makes our actual restoration work look like a steal in comparison.

That "distressed" finish just sounds like a bad DIY job.

Right? It's just lazy design.

The 2017 catalog from Restoration Hardware had a whole section on "honest wear" that basically started this trend. Christopher_wells4 is right about the DIY look, but the real issue is how it hides cheap materials. That fake aging covers up particle board and thin veneers that wouldn't look good smooth.
