I finally asked my friend why he still uses a flip phone

We were at a coffee shop in Austin last month and I saw him pull out this old Nokia. I asked him if he ever felt left out without apps or a good camera. He said, 'It makes me look at stuff, not just take pictures of it.' That stuck with me. Made me think about how we review gadgets mostly on features, not on how they change what we do. Anyone else have a friend who made them rethink what a gadget is for?

My uncle still uses a paper map in his car. He says the GPS voice telling him where to go makes him stop paying attention to the actual streets and buildings around him. He got lost once following a bad signal and ended up finding this amazing little diner he never would have seen otherwise.

Your uncle's smarter than my GPS, @patriciareed. Mine just got me a parking ticket.

Honestly, that flip phone thing hits home. My cousin still uses one and says it keeps her from doomscrolling when she's waiting in line or at the bus stop. Tbh it makes me feel a little silly for always needing my phone to fill every quiet second. There's something really smart about choosing a tool that does less, so you can actually do more in real life.
