inI always heard utility locates were for big jobs, so I skipped it on a home fence. Hit a gas line and now I'm the talk of the block for all the wrong reasons.
That news article you mentioned is exactly why I never skip calling for locates. @charlesm11 is right, it's just common sense even for minor digging. The possible damage is huge, and people can get hurt real bad. I don't care how small the job seems, always make that call. Being lazy here can cost you everything.
