Appreciation post: The old magnetic contact trick that saved a job

I tried using a standard gap on a warped wooden door in an old house and got constant false trips until I remembered my mentor's advice about adjusting for the swing. Anyone still keep a set of those old brass shims in their kit?

Spent more time trying to get the thing open" is the real horror story. You're telling me you fought with a tiny plastic seam for an hour, probably with a butter knife, and that's normal? My last one needed a special star-shaped screwdriver just to change the battery. They make it a puzzle on purpose.

Seems like a lot of fuss over a door sensor...

Right? It's just a piece of plastic that beeps. I bought one last year and the battery died in like three months. Spent more time trying to get the thing open to replace it than I ever spent worrying about my door.
