Back in my old book club in Portland, we'd always get stuck arguing about symbolism for hours

The problem was we'd spend a whole meeting on one chapter of something like 'The Goldfinch' and never finish the book. I suggested we set a 15 minute timer for deep analysis, then vote on whether to keep going or move on. It sounds simple, but it kept us from those endless circular debates. Anyone else find a good way to keep a book club discussion moving forward?

Honestly, we just banned talking about the author's intent.

What if you assigned a different person each time to lead the discussion? That way someone is always ready to push things along.
