I used to think those overnight bus rides were a terrible idea, but I tried one from Berlin to Amsterdam
For years, I avoided them, thinking you'd get zero sleep and arrive wrecked. The ticket was only 29 euros, though, so I gave it a shot last fall. The bus had reclining seats, was mostly quiet, and I actually slept okay. Waking up in a new city at 7 AM felt like a full free travel day, saving a hotel night. Now I'm torn, because it worked great for that short trip, but I've heard horror stories about longer routes. Has anyone else had a good or bad experience with a specific overnight bus route?

Yeah, the distance is the real factor. That Berlin to Amsterdam run is about what, six hours? That's short enough to be a weird nap. Try a twelve hour overnight bus through the Balkans or something, that's a whole different kind of punishment. The quality of the road and how many random stops they make for border checks or smoke breaks will break you. A good route on a decent highway is fine, a bad one on mountain roads is pure regret.

Ugh, @charles_kelly43 is totally right. It's like the whole trip gets decided by the little details, not just the time on the clock. You can plan for the big hours, but the random stops and bad roads are what actually ruin you.
