Pro tip: I stopped booking hotels in Paris and started looking at university dorms
Last spring, I was looking at $150 a night for a tiny hotel room near the Latin Quarter. On a whim, I checked if any local universities rented out empty dorms during their break. Found a clean single room at Sorbonne for 35 euros a night, about a 15 minute walk from Notre Dame. It was basic, but had a bed, a desk, and free wifi. Has anyone else tried this in other big cities during summer or holiday breaks?

Yeah, "solid move for budget travel" is right. I snagged a dorm room in Edinburgh last August and it was a total game changer for my wallet. You just have to be okay with the no frills vibe.

Did you bring earplugs and a sleep mask though? I learned that the hard way in a 12-bed dorm in Dublin. People come in at all hours, and the lights flick on randomly. My trick is a small travel lock for the locker and a power bank. You can't be too careful with your stuff in those shared rooms.

That's a solid move for budget travel. I've done it in a few college towns and it works well. Just don't expect any fancy hotel stuff.
