Changed my tune on ultrasonic cleaners for shutter mechanisms

I always thought they were overkill for a small shop like mine in Austin, but a repair on a Nikon F3 last month changed my mind. The shutter was dragging and my usual solvent bath didn't touch it, so I borrowed a friend's Crest unit as a last resort. After one 8-minute cycle, the curtains moved like new. What other stubborn jobs have you guys found an ultrasonic cleaner really helps with?

Borrowing a Crest unit is the camera repair version of calling in a tactical nuke. What's next, using it on a sticky light meter switch?

My buddy actually used a Crest unit on a sticky light meter, just like you joked about, @adam_adams. It worked, but he said it felt like using a fire hose to water a houseplant. He still gets teased for it at our local repair meetups.

That's hilarious, and honestly I get the teasing lol. Using a Crest unit for a light meter is like asking @adam_adams to bring a forklift to move a paperclip. Sure, the job gets done, but you look a bit silly doing it. Your buddy must have really wanted that meter fixed right then and there. Bet he checks for simpler tools twice now before borrowing the big guns.
