Heard someone say 'AI friends' are just a phase, but I'm not buying it

I was at a coffee shop in Denver last month and overheard two college kids arguing about whether talking to AI chatbots for companionship is a real thing or just a dumb fad. One of them said nobody will care about it in 2 years, it's just lonely people being weird. But I think they're wrong. My cousin uses one of those AI friend apps every day after work because he works nights and can't hang out with anyone else. If anything, it's just going to get bigger as more people feel isolated. Has anyone here actually tried one of those apps for more than a week?

Totally agree, my sister uses one too and it's been huge for her.

Dunno. Feels like we oversell every new thing and then it just kinda becomes background noise. Your cousin's situation makes sense, but most people probably aren't that lonely forever.

Honestly, do you think most people just settle for being lonely?
