Had to choose between a 5 gallon bucket and a fancy ceramic crock for my first big batch of sauerkraut. I went cheap.

Respect the bucket choice completely. The fancy gear doesn't make the kraut any better, it just makes your wallet lighter. What recipe did you go with?

Evan_burns95 is right about gear, but the real test is if your bucket can handle the smell for weeks in a small apartment.

Honestly, how many of us have that fancy crock just collecting dust? My first batch was in a mixing bowl with a plate on top. Did you just go with the classic salt and cabbage, or get adventurous with it?
