TIL my great grandma's 'secret' sauerkraut recipe was basically just salt and cabbage
I was going through a box of her old papers in the attic and found a handwritten note that said, 'For the kraut, one handful of salt per bucket, pack it tight, and wait.' I always thought there was some special spice or step she never told anyone. Does anyone else have a family recipe that turned out to be way simpler than you imagined?

Honestly thought those old recipes were hiding something fancy too. @laurac96 is right, the magic is just in the basic process. Turns out my grandpa's "secret" chili was just from a can with extra onions.

Yeah, "pack it tight and wait" is the whole secret... it's funny how we build up these family mysteries. My grandma's famous pickles were just cucumbers left in the sun in a jar of vinegar water.

Wait, I don't know... I feel like the secret is the care they put in. My aunt's jam tastes like home because she made it every summer, not just because of the fruit. That time and love is the real ingredient.
