Hired a local crew for my basement reno and they went MIA for 2 weeks

I booked Classic Renovations out of Edmonton for my basement drywall and taping back in March. They showed up for one day, did part of the mudding, then ghosted me for 2 weeks with no call. Has anyone else had contractors disappear like that in Edmonton or was I just unlucky?

Heated debate: Should we use lithium grease on landing gear or stick to the old stuff?

I was down at the hangar at KBWI last Thursday watching a crew do a landing gear overhaul, and they had a big argument going about grease. One old timer swore by the traditional Aeroshell grease, says it's been working for 30 years and he's never seen a failure. The other guy, younger guy, was pushing a new lithium-based grease because it handles heat better and doesn't drip as much in summer. I've been doing this for about 6 years now, mostly line maintenance, and I've only ever used what the manual says. But seeing them go back and forth got me thinking, is there really a better option out there or is it all just manufacturer hype? The older grease leaves a mess on the struts sometimes, but the lithium stuff costs twice as much. Anyone here switched from the standard to something newer and seen real results, or should I just stick with what's in the book?

Just found out the original 'Distracted Boyfriend' stock photo model is a real person with a name

I was looking up that meme for a work presentation and stumbled on an article about the photographer. The guy in the red shirt is actually an actor named Mario, and the girlfriend and the other girl are friends in real life. Weird how something that feels so random has a whole story behind it.

That $80 Amazon trowel that warped after 3 pours

I bought this fancy magnesium trowel online for 80 bucks last month, figured it was a steal compared to the supply house. After three slabs the blade bowed in the middle and left ripples I couldn't fix. Anybody else get burned by cheap tools or do you stick with a certain brand?

Wasted $200 on pre-finished engineered hardwood. Never again.

Bought a bunch last month from a local supplier in Phoenix. Thought it would save time. But the finish was inconsistent on every plank. Had to cut and fit around bad spots for three days straight. Then half the edges chipped during installation. Anyone else get burned by pre-finished stuff like this?

That one conversation at a diner in Gary changed how I handle job interviews

I was eating breakfast at a diner in Gary last March and this older guy at the next table overheard me complaining about a job interview I bombed. He leaned over and said 'you're trying too hard to be who they want, just show up as yourself and let the cards fall.' It stuck with me because I realized I was spending all my prep time memorizing answers instead of being real. He was a retired plant manager, worked at US Steel for 38 years. Has anyone else had a random stranger give you career advice that actually worked better than all the books?

I finally got why people hate on detailed worldbuilding after a convo with a sci-fi writer at a coffee shop

She said tossing in 50 pages of lore just slows the story down like a sandbag on a kite, but is that really true or is it just her genre bias vs. fantasy's need for deep settings?

Just realized how much the algorithm killed real connections on Instagram

I was at a photographer meetup in Brooklyn last fall, and someone mentioned they missed the old days of Instagram where you could just post a photo and people would actually see it. Back in 2015, I could share a shot of a fire escape and get real comments from 30 people I actually knew. Now I feel like I have to play detective to figure out what the algorithm wants - hashtags, reels, stories, carousels - none of it feels genuine anymore. Has anyone else noticed their engagement tanking no matter what you try?

Switched from clippers to straight razors for a full head shave and it was night and day different

I always used clippers with a guard for my own head but last week tried a straight razor on a buddy. The shave was SO much smoother and lasted 3 days longer before stubble showed. Has anyone else made that swap and noticed a big difference?

I stopped buying coffee out and it saved me $680 in 3 months

I was dropping $5-6 almost every morning at this cafe near my office. I bought a $20 thermos and started making my own pour-over at home, and even with the bag of beans every 2 weeks I'm still way ahead. Anybody else shocked at what they actually spend on little daily habits?
